How well protected is your IT infrastructure to cyber-attacks?

For most business owners or managers, the prospect of a cyber-attack targeting their organisation is something of a background concern as they get on with the day-to-day running of their company, perceived as unlikely to happen to them.

Last week however, came another stark reminder of how even seemingly well protected large organisations can still be crippled by cyber-attacks.

For five days, an NHS Trust in England was forced to shut down most of their IT networks because of a cyber-attack, resulting in the cancelation of appointments and routine surgeries across three hospitals.

At the height of the crisis, a statement on their website stated that, “Our A&Es are open, but we urge everyone to think twice before they go to A&E – if it’s not serious or life threatening, you shouldn’t be there.”

While the results of most cyber-attacks couldn’t be described as life threatening, they can indeed be crippling to an organisation. With any internet connected IT infrastructure there can never be a 100% guarantee of security, however many smaller organisation often miss even the basic steps needed to protect their systems, leaving them an easy target for cyber criminals.
