Windows Information Protection

One of the most important reasons for moving from Windows 7 to Windows 10 was the security benefits that it brought, and this has been further enhanced by Windows Information Protection (WIP) which began shipping with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update in 2016.

WIP is a data loss prevention system integrated into Windows, and unlike many other 3rd party solutions which can protect data in a similar way, because it’s truly integrated it doesn’t introduce an undesirable level of friction for users.

The key purpose of Windows Information Protection is that it helps to ensure that only authorised personnel or application have access to your business data. WIP can also be effective in ensuring content from corporate documents doesn’t leak by way of copy and paste operations.

As WIP is fully integrated into Windows and is always working behind the scenes, it doesn’t require the use of any special folders and doesn’t need to change modes. Most reassuring though is that it can also offer protection even after data has been copied across to external devices such as a USB drives.

If WIM is not currently operating on your systems, then some policies within your MDM or System Configuration Manager will need to be adjusted. For further information please contact Rod at RML in Cambridge on 01223 873747.
